HELP please!!...... my transmition is very sick
it has been grinding when i would down shift into 3rd at times and now it just started this with 2nd gear now. i took my car into the dealer and they said it was the synchros just as i thought, they want $5,ooo to fix it, what else can i do here. Can i get another transmition? maybe RS4 or RS2 i also heard would work... please let me know what i can do or instant message me on mers1083.... thankyou paul

Least expensive is to find a 5 speed from a 1.8t or from a 2.8 at a recyclers.
You can find them for ~750 . . figure 5-6 hrs labor to swap them.
You can swap a S4 or RS2 6 speed in but that will be way more $ and you'll need to swap a few other parts; output flanges or the front axles and hubs; rear diff or the ring and pinion gear; shifter, etc.<ul><li><a href="http://www.car-part.com/">http://www.car-part.com/</a</li></ul>

You can have your trans rebuilt with some RS2 stuff...
like the hardened gears, etc,
