Re: how are the k03s different in the b6 and the b5?
I don't know the exact specifics on the differences in the turbos, but between the B6 and the B5, isn't the right question. The turbo changed when the 170 hp engine came out, there were slight changes to the design, having to do with the impeller &/or turbine blades, and also to the bearing design. These changes made the turbo more reliable & able to produce more power, quicker.
There were additional engine changes to the 1.8T when the body style changed from B5 to B6, but I believe the turbo stayed the same, essentially. Engine management was changed slightly, using more sensitive oxygen sensors, higher flow OEM exhaust, and maybe a slightly larger cam lobe.
Passat 1.8T K-03 is similar to the A4's. IIRC, they're the same.

Changes to the K03 started with the 2000 model.
Another update to the K03 then happened in 2001, but they also increased the boost pressure to help gain the 20 hp over the 150 hp models.

Borg warner took over KKK... the balance shaft was strengthened.. i dont think much else was changed
i believe compressor wheel pitch was kept the same along with A/R and trim sizes.... the result you wont hear the compressor wheel slapping the compressor housing at boost levels above 12psi. as for B5=>B6 that wasnt when the change occured like mike said it occured when they went to 150hp=>170hp ie 2000=>2001

So I'm assuming that VW uses the K03 Sport on their 2001+ 1.8T as well?
It spools faster than my 1997 K03 did, but the stock DBW software sucks imo. Lifting a tiny bit at partial throttle makes the car buck, and it goes to high boost at partial throttle as well. I've replaced the DV with the 06A, but the stock valve had the same part number stamped on it, so maybe VW uses the TT valve straight from the factory. I'm not a big fan of DBW period. Though it's a pretty fast car with 180hp and my skinny *** driving alone.
