Default Common....

was it just in the IM, or was there any on the hose leading to the TB?

IMHO, the crank vent system isn't all that great, so more than likely, that's where the oil is coming from.

cool... The intake hose was pretty clean. Is this why some people use a catch can?

Default Yep...

oil in the combustion chambers can cause detonation.

I've got the hose disconnected that runs from the crankcase to the intake manifold, and the main line goes to a catch can instead of before the turbo.

Eventually, I'll get an oil separator, and then run it back into before the turbo.

Why is the catch can not a good idea?

9mm is too small, you need the 15mm version since 1.8Ts use a 3/4" tubing

Default It's an OK unit...

but it doesn't do anything to separate the oil from the air. It's just an open container.

Granted, it's better than nothing, but at the least, you should fill it up with scrubber pads to help catch/hold the oil.

And definatly get the 15mm version. I bought one to put in my XR4Ti, but never got around to it. Personally, I've got -12 AN lines running to my breather, which is 3/4" i.d. (19mm), so I'd want a catch can with the same size inlets (the bigger the better for catch cans) Problem is, I don't know of any (not yet anyways)

Default It is a good idea. There are two different version of a catch can...

the breather type, which vents to the atmosphere, and the separator type, which vents back to the intake system.

The separator type is the one to get. The breather type is better than nothing (It's what I have for now), but you'll get the occasional oil smell, which is starting to annoy me.
