they go bad but only if they install the new springs and to do the install they want 400. Do you think i should do this, the price seems a bit steep?

Will they also warranty an alignment, and the labor of putting in the new shocks?
Putting lowering springs on, with factory stock shocks will cause the shocks to wear prematurely. I wouldn't expect more than maybe 10k miles from the shocks, which means you'll need them replaced fairly regularly.

10K even with the so called matched Eibachs offered as an Audi option?
I've got about 9k on mine, '00 2.7T with Pro-Kit 1563.140 The only thing I've noticed is a bit more floaty at hwy speeds.
