Default Just bought a 1999 a4 1.8TQM, want some advice for big HP mods.

Just got a Ming Blue 1999 A4 1.8tqm

I want to get at least 400HP+

Any advice on mods and which way to go.

Is Stock drive train strong enough?

which kit to install etc...

Default Be ready to spend a ton of cash.

There are no kits out there that make over 350 hp so you will have to go all custom and that is not cheap. The main problem you will find is going to be tuning.

Now if you really want 400+ hp sell the 1.8t, buy a S4 and then buy a stage 3 turbo kit and the rest of the mods for about $10k+.

Default HP costs money, how fast do you want to go?

How much you looking to spend?

For about $5000, you can get a kit to make a little over 300hp.
For maybe $15000, you can have a custom kit made to get 400hp.

I've got ~$10k into my 2.0 setup, and I'm still working on getting it tuned.

Stock drivetrain should be strong enough, you can always upgrade to S4 trans, axles, hubs, etc later.

Default Better watch out for the S4 tranny

some of the S4 guys have even been blowing them up too.

Default $$$ If you have time & $$$, then do custom is the only way.

Also, if you don't care about reliability & drivability that'll help! And lastly, I hope you have as much patience as I do. I have a Jetta 1.8T as the daily driver.

But IMO, don't work on the A4 for huge HP gains. Just too much $$$ wasted. Maybe just a little regret on my part!

=)

Cheers,

Steve

Default Was thinking of doing

Standalone engine management, Motec/Autronic or something like that, the i should not have tuning probs.
Larger Turbo of some type, Garett turbos seem to be most popular here.
Tube Manifold
Strong Bottom end rebuild.
head work etc..

I haven't seen anyone here with 2L actually outperforming 1.8L, so I wonder is it best to stay with 1.8L.

Default

There seem to be a few guys around that are making more than 350HP.

Default Your Probably on the right track.

Have a Look at how Big nippers car is going to turn out.

I am also a bit dissappointed on 2L setups,
even Mike (Audi2ptzero) has had his car in the shop more than he has driven it, and when he has taken it out to the drags, gets slower times with 2L & K04 than others get with 1.8L and K-04.
But there are many factors why that may be the case.

Default Which would be who?

Everyone of those are a full custom setup. When you go custom the chip will be designed for just that car and will not work on another car the exact same way. You will not find a turbo kit that makes more then 350. Look at some of the guys that decided to go with a T3/T4 like xr4tic and you will see that they all have had tuning issues in the past. Once you get to the point of making double the stock hp you start to run into issues when it comes to tuning.

Default Actually the car was never in the shop once I got it back with the 2 liter.

I had that for 5 months before taking it back to have a new turbo put in. The only issue I had with the car was on the day we first started up the motor, one of the valve springs broke and had to be replaced.

The main issue for the 2.0-K04 is that the K04 can only produce so much air, which makes the K04 way too small for a 2 liter. The other issues came down to my new motor having 8:1 compression vs stock 9.5:1 and I was only running a chip that was designed for a stock 9.5:1 motor, this means I would have to run alot more boost to make up for the lower compression but yet I was actual running less boost the a 1.8-K04. But if you actual look at my times, they are pretty much just as fast as the other K04's at 14.1 at 97.8 mph.
