Just read that the W8 uses a 180 degree crank. Should sound sweet!

For those not schooled in V8 lore, a normal V8 crank is phased with a journal every 90 degrees. The motor runs smoothly, with a combustion event every 90 degrees, but you always have one pair of cylinders in each bank that fire out of order, so you can't scavenge properly with headers unless you use a "bundle of snakes" crossover header, which usually only fit a mid-engined car.

A 180 degree crank has higher bearing loads, Because you have adjacent cylinders firing very closely together, but sounds sweet because of the even firing order in each header (each header primary sees valve opening events 180 degrees apart) and has that tearing canvas exhaust note rather than the arhythmmic rumble we have come to associate with V8s, or harley davidsons, which fire 405 degrees apart (and you wondered all these years where that V8 rumble came from. Thank the pig... (Thanks pig))

Waiting to see/hear on in the flesh...

Now if Audi would put that motor in a B6 Cabriolet... Whoo! Sold!

I assume the motor is a 5-main bearing motor just like a standard V8 with 15 degree splits on the rod journals so the banks will fire at 90 degree intervals.

Saw it on VWVORTEX, couldn't contain myself.

Default Rumor and innuendo

An article about a tuner who stuffed a 4.2 v8 in an A4 started with "since Turbos have fallen out of favor" Hmm let me see, they offer the 1.8T in the bug, golf, jetta, tt, A4, A4, A6 (europe) and offer the 2.7T in the S4, RS4, A6, and allroad. Audi won lemans and ALMS with turbo cars. Yup, Turbos must be out of favor.

I have no freaking idea what the S4 will have, but the W8 gives you an instant 40% displacement hit (4.0 vs 2.7) so can make decent power w/o turbos. No real word (just innuendo) about them fitting it to the Audis. There is a certain amount of NIH factor, as its OK for a VW to use an Audi engine, but I wonder if the politicking goes the other way, even if the VW motor IS a neat idea.

In other words, no clue.

You heard it here first.
