Default K03 versus K04

The inlet for the K04 (left) starts at 42mm and tapers to about 40.5mm at the compressor wheel. The K03 (right) starts at 36mm but tapers down to about 32mm.

I don't know if this is the same turbo that is on the RS4....but I suspect that it is. Audi Motorsport sent us the K04's about the middle of the race season.

We put 10 races on the engine....leakdown is from 8% to 27%....all leakage is through the valves...particularly the intakes. The turbos were used when we got them and we put one 4 hour race and five sprint races on them plus a lot of test days. Even though they are boosting fine, the shaft has a fair amount of play so it is time to rebuild them. We will pull the heads to reseat/inspect the valves and seats plus check the pistons/bearings/etc.

After pulling the valve covers off....the cams look brand new. I expect to find the crankshaft and bearings in excellent condition....even though this engine spends its life at 5,000 to 7,400 rpm

Default Re: K03 versus K04

You might as well check your valve guides, they would most likely show a lot of wear.
I know in the 1.8T engine they do wear a fair bit.

The Pics of the K-04, you have it seems the outside diamter of the compressor hose fitting is the larger than the K-03. All the K-04 I have seen the Outside diameter of the Inlet hose fitting was exactly the same, Could you confirm this please?

Default I find it interesting that everyone slams the K04 as being a piece of ****...

but here you have Audi giving K04 turbos to a team that is racing one of their models. You'd think that if the K04 was such a POS Audi would find an alternative to give you guys out of fear that if the turbos failed on the circuit constantly people would start to make jokes about Audi reliability...and 3K Warner turbo quality...something that would be harmful to all parties involved.

I don't know I just think it's some food for thought. I pushed my K04 pretty hard and never had a single problem with it, I think it's a good part as long as you don't expect silly amounts of boost to be sustained for long periods of time..

Default It's an optical illusion...it's not bigger...look at the spacing between the various holes

on the compressor housing...all those things should be the same and you can see on the K04 they appear to be further apart...but we know this is not the case. So you should scale what you're looking at by this amount.

Default No...they are different

The O.D. of the K04 is 50mm. the O.D. of the K03 is 44mm. The K04 uses an o-ring seal on the compressor housing whereas the K03 uses a smaller o-ring in the manifold leading to it.

We modified our manifolds into the turbos quite a bit to make them work.

Keep in mind that there are some 30 different variations of the K04 turbo out there.

Default K04 part number

The Audi part numbers are 078 145 703M and 704M

The KKK #'s are K03-11826/20 for the left and K04-11828 for the right

Default The K04 shown in the picture is NOT the one I had,

It will not accept the OE plumbing.

It appears there is a "larger" K04. Clark, you don't have one?

I may be wrong, but most likely there are strict rules in place that will limit what DonIstook can put on his car for racing. He may not have a choice on what brand or spec. turbocharger he runs.
