Default Knock sensors going haywire?

Hey all, remember me with the low 02s voltages and LOTS of per cylinder ignition timing retard? Well I'm back with all new and improved larger injectors! Now my 02S voltages are up in the .88-.89 range so that would apparently seem to be about the right range for a 2000 1.8T A4. With this added fuel I'm *STILL* getting about 9-10 degrees of timing retard per cylinder. The car doesn't appear to have a problem when its cold but as soon as it warms up it runs rough and doesn't make any power. This is all with boost levels right around .9-1 bar. If I turn the boost up to 1.4 bar I get the same amount of retard.

What are some things I should start looking at now? Could it just be oversensetive knock sensors from the beginning? How about going with a lower temp thermostat to keep the engine cooler. How about some super cold spark plugs to thwart off the evil ping gremlins. I can only hear pings during shifts but nothing audible when the car is at WOT, just crappy timing and crappy driving.

Thoughts? suggestions? magical spells?

Thanks,
-Brent

Default The pinging is the problem then ...

You shouldn't have ANY pinging. The sensors are saving your bacon. I can't hear knocking with the windows up.

The issue is the gas octane/timing/boost. The reason why the back off on the timing is the same at the two boost levels is that the retard is completely maxed out.

1. Try better gas, try better gas with Toluene.
2. Get an improved intercooler.
3. Get a water injection system.

Lower coolant and plug temps are last ditch kludge "fixes" and not advised. Any anyone who would recommend them is suspect.

Default Call chip vendor!!!

Timing retard is in response to pinging/knock. This can cause all sorts of expensive damage. My car ate a spark plug electrode! Not good.

Call chip vendor, see if you can get a less agressive timing map, lower boost chip, or go back to stock.

This is serious stuff!

Default It does not have much to do with the chip. His car has done this with even the stock K03

on a chip. If we can find the problem that his car has we might also figure out the same thing for CharlieSD since his car pings like crazy to, even when he had a apr chip and stock K03.

Default it only did that twice & both times were in AZ

with ambient temps well over 100. combined with 91 octane on an (IMO) over-agressive chip for the fuel it was just a matter of time.......

whats happening now is completly diffrent
