good size framing nail. in the tread about an inch in from the shoulder.
my pal, who is an audi dealer line mechanic, says he has a plug kit that 'spreads' the steel belts and he trusts this plug kit. (my own thinking is that the nail has already done whatever damage can be done to the belts and the plug is merely replacing the nail.)
on the other hand, i've always heard that it's better to patch than plug.
opinions??

patch is WAY better than plug... some places (America's Tire?) will do patches for free!
at least, they did for me -- and I didn't even get my tires there! Hmm, or was it a Discount Tire cetner? I think they are the same company, anyway..

Vulcanize Patch.....
My Portenza RE730's have been Tracked at Thunderhill & Laguna Seca (right rear)
Auto-X'ed etc.

You can also do both. They plug it, trim the plug down a little, and patch. Double protection.
A lot of places won't plug or patch high performance tires, so you may have to look around a little.
