anything with the word Audi is 2-4x more expensive to make HP than the cars you have listed
many people have already pushed the A4 to its limits, and you'll find DSMs and Civics to be much faster.

anything with the old 12v 2.8 engine would be a fun project...lots of parts etc
...if you want to email with someone who does the rice thing drop me one...i have my a6 and an 86 mr2 with a carburated 4-age...

you could...but very little support/products available.
But if you literally wanted to started from scratch you could, but why not start with a S4 at that point? Way more support, capability, and already turbo charged.

a4 1.8t will be the least expensive and s4 2.7t will be most expensive
but even a 1.8t's are expensive to make go fast compared to dsm's or honda's.
Look on vwvortex's 1.8t forum for lots more info.
you can get 400-500 or even more hp out of the 1.8t but it's peaky. The stock internals will not hold for very long with those kinds of power levels. You'll have to change them.
You can get the same sort of power levels with the 2.7t's but they have a much broader power band. The stock internals seem to hold up ok on these.

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=27
