Modification suggestions for 1998 1.8Q with Tip (spouse rqmt.)
I did a search of the archive for this topic, but could not find exactly the thread. I am a new owner and the car is completely stock. I'd like some suggestions/feedback as to modifications paths. I am interested in mods. that provide the best value and my definition of value is performance w/o giving up too much reliability/upkeep. I don't think I will modify past stage III. Lastly, I don't have the $$ to do it all at once, so if you already have modications what would you do differently? TIA

Priorities and $$$
will drive your decision. Unfortunately, stage 3 will be very costly b/c the Tip would need to be overhauled ($7000+) to handle to hp/tq....
My opinions...
1) Tires and wheels. Tires will determine the limits of handling for your car. Invest in a good set of rubber (two sets if you see snow) to ensure that all your mod money doesn't end up in a ditch. Wheels are a logical thing to change with tires since you'll probably want to step up to 17". The other real benefit to wheels is that you can change the appearance of your car dramatically with a nice set of aftermarket wheels. You'll find that this is one of the few "all show, no go" mods that is accepted by all as a must-have. Expect to spend $1500-$2500.
2) Chip. Best bang for the buck in terms of performance. 50hp will transporm your car. $400.
3) Radar detector. See above. $400
4) Suspension. Many options based on preferences and budget. $700-2000
5) Exhaust and Air filter - squeezes out another 10-15hp. $500+
6) Brakes. Gotta stop... $800+
7) Headlights - stock 98s suck. get a set of e-code projectors. $400
8) Show mods - debadge, grille, body kits....
Have fun!
