This is on a cool 16 degree celsius day. However if I let the car sit & idle, temp goes up to 85 deg celsius tops. When driving around, it is usually 79-80 celsius.
I have a 96 A41.8TM.
However, my father-in-law's 99A41.8TAuto reaches a plateau temp of 90deg celsius.
Is there a difference in temp settings or thermostats???? Stumped!
Also notice the temp gauge needle reads lower than the climate control temp reading. There is a significant lag time between the two readings. Why is that?
Which reading should I believe?

Mine sits at 90, but the oil temp take a lot longer to reach 100.
My water temp goes up pretty quickly but the oil temp takes forever to reach 90 degrees or the 100 degrees it usually runs. And I thought the water cooled the oil (I know it does but why the water goes up faster just dosen't make sense).
You could have a low temp. thermostat that turns on the fan faster to keep your car at those temps, check it out, or just replace it, they aren't expensive.
BTW I have a 2001 A4 1.8T.
