Need some help with this 1.8t chip problem...
Just installed my chipped ECU in my new '01 A41.8t, and results are poor. See my thread on the A4 forum, and thanks for any pointers you can throw my way...

How about gasoline?
If you are at WOT doing a 50-70 run, the turbo/fuel system in 5th gear should be working at capacity, and maximum load.
If the computer detects knock, it will retard timing and decrease boost by control of the wastegate (the sound you are hearing).
You should be running 93 octane gas, I would check to make sure you didn't get a bad tank, even if you filled up with what you thought was 93. Add some octane boost (mix well with a gallon or two of gas) and see if you notice a difference.
Just another idea,
Best of luck in approach of the sound barrier,
Michael

True, but I filled up right before this with 93 from a regular station that I trust.
Doesn't mean that they couldn't have gotten a bad batch, but it seems to be low on the likelihood list. Might try putting in a Bailey or Forge valve to see if that solves the problem, since I was heading that direction eventually anyway (pros/cons of each?)
Throws a major wet blanket on my day, though.

That was the first thing I did...
... and the response was, basically, "sounds like your car is broken". They suggested that it was perhaps a leak in the intake or a bypass valve problem.

Nope, I'm switching between stock and chipped in testing.
And they're not backwards, either. "Stock" is clearly stock. "Chipped" feels and sounds different than anything I've experienced in the car; I'm pretty sure it's venting boost under WOT, but not clear as to where (mechanically via bypass valve, or under direction of the ECU via wastegate?) In any event, I'm pretty sure it's not an intake leak.
