New Saab OH-MY

New Saab OH-MY
it has a 1.6L supercharged motor with Varible compression engine. Boosts are expected to be around 2.8 bar. The V-compression adjust comp. ratio by sensing the throttle position, city driving the comp. ratio is set very high, to increase mpg. When performance is demanded the comp. is lowerd allowing the high boost.
This car is expected to be in devolpment int 2-4yrs. All I can say is nice job Saab, Audi get on the ball.
PS-this was all from Motor Trend TV

Yes, excellent innovation...check out this link...
..it has another version of a variable compression engine, explained nicely.

That one is much more complicated than the Saab approach...way less elegant...here's how the Saab
one works...at least the general principle...I posted this reply in the A4 forum.

SAAB Variable Compression Engine

Yes, the SAAB design is definately simpler, and thats...
...why I think they're the first ones to market with their engine (well not for a couple of years anyway). It's an excellent development not only for them, but the whole industry as other manufacturers will have to come up with competetive equivalents.
Dontcha just love competition?

All I can say is... what a mechanical nightmare!
Typical Saab. my best friend has driven them since the 60s. Including the 3 cylinder 2-stroke (Saab 96?). I've won some ice races driving his 900. They've always seemed dorky, engineering wise. I would never own one. This variable compression involves pivoting the head assembly on block. The cylinders bolt to the head and are not supported by the block. Sounds like their gonna flex like crazy, especially under all the boost. Also, this would be an interference engine to the extreme. Can't be a hell've lot valve clearance max compression. Don't miss that shift!!

Reviews of this car..
..were quite positive. I saw a couple of TV shows (don't remember which ones) where they reviewed a retro-fitted SAAB 9-5 with a 1.6L variable compression engine. It was stronger than their asymetrically turbocharged engine, but got much better gas mileage!
The reviewer acknowledged that the car was not up to production standards, but that's acceptable as this was a one-off prototype tester, and production is still about 3 years away.
I say if they can figure it out in a good enough way, more power to em. It'll be good for all of us.
My 2 cents..
