Default New timing belt tensioner.

At some point after the 99 model, Audi redesigned the timing belt tensioner and obsoleted the old part. The ball and socket joint you see on the old (left) one pops apart allowing the belt to skip teeth. If you have the old style, I suggest you get your belt and tensioner replaced now. Mine failed at 35K and this is not unusual.

Default Thanks for the info Rich....

I'm at 58K and are starting to squeal at startup.
Going to have mine changed soon.

Did you do the install yourself or did you have the dealer?

How much was the parts and labor if dealer did it, if you don't mind sharing.

Thanks,
David

Default Almost $4K.

Well, that included the brand new head and resurfacing all of the pistons. This was done under warranty at a shop in Redding, CA.

Get that belt changed!

Default How come you had to have a new head and resurface the pistons....

Were they damagend in any way because of the timing belt and tensioner?

4k is alot too!

Do you know how hard it is to change the valve cover gasket?

I finally took the plastic engine cover off since I bought the car used and saw that the gasket needs to be replaced because oil seems to be coming out of it. Unfortunately my car is not under warranty anymore. In the process of trying to get another warranty.

Default 1.8T is an "Interference Engine". If the timing belt breaks...

...there's a high probability of valve/piston contact and subsequent damage.
