Default Not a must, but highly recommended...

basically, the stock system is designed to produce a vacuum in the crankcase.

This does two things:
1. promotes better ring sealing
2. helps keep gas fumes and combustion by-products out of the oil

Unfortunately, the system can suck oil out of the crankcase, and into the intake system. If oil gets into the combustion chamber under boost, it can cause detonation.

An oil catch can will keep oil out of the intake tract, and also keep boost out of the crankcase

Default The bad thing about the stock setup is

when you increase the boost, you also increase that vacume at the crank case. This will cause more oil to come out and also increase a chance of blow by.

Default more vacuum in the crankcase is a good thing....

That's why a lot of race engines use a vacuum pump.

What's probably happening is the increased boost is leaking past the rings and pressurizing the crankcase, or it's leaking past the PCV valve and pressurizing the crankcase.

Vacuu m pump

Default It's not that hard....

if you get the coolant tank out of the way, you should be able to get in there. At most the intake manifold would have to come off.

I used an NPT to AN adapter (the blue piece):

I don't remember the size though.

The PCV valve is the white valve in the Tee

I then ran Aeroquip hose to a JAZ breather can.

The JAZ unit is pretty big, so you might want to find something smaller.

The GReddy catch can is another option, that can even be plumbed back into the intake system (pre-turbo)

Default But I dont think they are sucking using a pump that is running at 15+psi.

That and the fact that their pump is not going to put that into the intake.
