Obviously it depends on your budget. In general aftermarket support for the 12v is poor, mainly due to the tuner unfriendly hitachi ecu, but also because the majority of tuners energy has been devoted to the 1.8t and to a lesser extent the 30v. This does not mean aftermarket support is non existent. You can start out with a drop in K&N airfilter or an open element air filter. A cat back exhaust will free up a few horsepower. Schrick makes cams for the 12v, and there are also larger throttle bodies available. For anything much more than this serious dollars are going to be spent. Vortrag does a lot of engine work on the 12v and has built some fast NA 12valves. I however, ended up having a complete custom turbo installation done on my car. It all depends on your budget and your goals.

You have to get the car to them and it costs ~$7k. It includes a huge number of internal changes and is really a thorough kit. If you can afford it, it's a great way to go.
