poor gas mileage - bizarre solution

I have a 1998 A4 2.8L Quattro with manual transmission. I got it in October of 1997. I would get about 24 miles to the gallon in town, and ~28 on the highway. At six months it started to drop and I regularly complained to my dealer who couldn't find a problem. One year ago, just before my warranty expired, my last complaint to the dealer indicated gas milage in town of 17-18 miles to the gallon, and highway of at most 22 if I was lucky.
Four weeks ago I was on a one week trip, and when I came back my car wouldn't start. The radio was really weak, but was getting some power. The car couldn't be jumped by a friend. I assumed it was the battery, so I took it out and went and got a new battery. The car started right up, no problem.
Other than this, I have made no modifications in driving style, or where I buy my fuel. I'm now getting 24 miles to the gallon in-town, and 28 miles to the gallon highway.
It's almost like the car got rebooted, or hard reset by the battery dying. Figure THAT out!
