problem solved - not a gasket but the downpipe...
my exhaust noise was misdiagnosed - first 2 people who looked at it thought it was the exhaust manifold gasket gone bad, turns out it was a cracked downpipe. oh, and a cracked flange. great. and I thought they knew what they were talking about. dave at ngp could tell it was the downpipe just by listening.
now it's out with the so-so borla and in with a 2.5 milltek. guess the $$ will net at least net me a few extra hp and a nicer sound. but I'm really glad it wasn't part of the s3 install goodies to go bad.
thanks to all for advice and input!

The factory downpipe in the 5ktq broke at the turbo flange. Not enough flex in the system when the engine mounts got old/worn out, and it just snapped at the weld. Perhaps the Borla needs an Epiflex flex section in it?

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I know from experience it can be troubling not
Knowing what's going on. But it sure feels good to get it all straightened out.
Way back when. I installed my s3, I was having overboost issues. Turned out to be, I installed 2 vaccum lines backwards [hits hand to forehead]
When I reveresed the lines, everything was fine. LOL
