Question for TMS or anyone with GIAC K03 to K04 upgrade
HI!
I've got a '99 1.8TQ with GIAC 1.0. Stock exhaust. It is a great enhancement from the stock tuning.
I'm considering the K04 upgrade from AWE (Don't have nearly enough cash for APR stage III), including an exhaust.
I'd love to hear comments comparing performance with the two setups- i.e. is it worth the $2000?
Also, where did you get your K04 kits from, are they significantly different from each other, and are you happy with the product and service.

I had a GIAC K03 chipped car and then went to the GIAC K04
The performance difference is definately noticable. I think it's worth the money. I'm currently having some issues, but even with them the car is damn fast. More than fast for the street...
Most of the kits are the same, the only real difference is the chip. If you want to know more, drop me an email...

I went straight to the K04 from stock but I can say I am happy with the results. I tried (more)
two different chips and settled with the GIAC. Nicer throttle response off the line mostly but also some more top end. You can buy the stuff piece by piece but in the end, I think you are just as well to go a kit. You won't spend much more. AWE has a good kit but there are others. I think a full catback system is a good idea with the K04. I certainly noticed the difference installing mine. Performance does drop off when the machine is hot so I believe the K04 does tax the stock intercooler so I am going to go with a FMIC for more consistent performance and reliability.

You can buy a K04 for 785.00....
You an get the Turbo for 785.00, but make sure it's the K04-15 with the oil line, there are two or three variants and the other two you'll have to drill for an oil line. Now it fits the manifold, et yourself a Garrett Chip and switch your oil to redline synthetic. Oh yeah if you have a trubo timer, two minutes is good. If you don't need a cat., remove it if you have one oxygen sensor, it'll lower EMT temperatures and prolong the life of your turbo.

Re: Question for TMS or anyone with GIAC K03 to K04 upgrade
I'm still happily enjoying my K04 upgrade and consider it a good value. Its more powerful than the K03 with chip, especially above 5K RPM. It keeps pulling hard all the way to 7K RPM.
I actually bought the kit (made by AWE) from a guy who decided not to install it and paid $950, plus $500 for installation.
I beleive that all the K04 kits are nearly identical, except for those that come with an extrude honed manifold (which I plan to add next!) to my list of modifications. I also plan to add a high flow cat and down pipe, if I can find a good cat that doesn't throw codes.
Hope this helps............email me if you have more specific questions.
