Default Rethinking my custom turbo build up.. more questions...

It seems to me that the most expense comes from upgrading the 1.8L up to the 2.0L. I have two avenues of thought going here and I wonder which one you guys think makes the most sense.

1) stick with the 1.8L, find the strongest internals I can (suggestions on internals would be awesome) and run a slightly smaller turbo (GT25RS, or T3/T4) with higher boost.

2) because I'm going to have to upgrade the internals anyway, just make the jump up the 2.0L and run a bigger turbo (GT30R) on lower boost.

I know the 2.0L has more potential, but my thought is that path 1 is easier, and cheaper and I may be able to bite the bullet and compromise some HP. All in all I'd be happy with 300 to the wheels.

So whats everyone think.. 1 or 2 (or 3 for that matter, throw out anything, still trolling for new ideas)

get an ABA block like xr4tic, but go 2.1 ,get a GT30, FMIC and do a S4 transmission swap (rear end and all). that was my dream but my buddy got shipped to Iraq. I can't find a good shop in the area

there wont be much of a price difference between a fully forged 1.8 or 2.0 for the parts...

Default well you can put a GT30 on the 1.8....

but spool time is kind of annoying on a street car. Nerdhotrod has one on his GTI and runs stock internals and the 1.8 block.

Default any idea on what boost level he's running?...

I've heard the GT30R won't spool on the 1.8T until 4500 RPM. I'm still an Amateur and I'm just learning how to read compressor maps and match turbos to engines and what not..

Also, the GTI is FWD and gets a greater precentage of HP fro the crank to the wheels. So I have to make more crank HP to get the same wheel HP as a GTI (which I'm sure you already know...) hence why I'm worried about the internals

Default I forget what his boost levels are....i think 23-24psi...not totally positive...

remember...you need to know boost...but mass airflow is the biggest factor of power. At colder temps, the same/higher mass airflow will give you more power and at less boost pressure.

You are also correct on the spool time...I don't think its 4500, but I think he can spool it at like 3800 - 4000. You should ask him though, he hangs around on VWVortex alot.

There's some hardware stuff you can do to reduce the spool time. Things like exhaust size, test pipes, external wastegate sizes, different A/R turbine sections

Default 1 sounds good plan.

if you look at garret turbos, T28, gt25r, gt30r, gt35r.. (size in this order)

T28 is good for over 320hp crank, and about 280whp fwd (dunno quattro). spools nicely around 3500rpm full boost)

gt25r, i dunno the power until i take it to dyno and tuning properly. it spools 4100rpm full and boost rises to over 28psi @ 6500rpm.. probably 30psi+ if you take it to 7000rpm with wg shut.
this is the turbo i am running and i feel it is tad bit too big. i have it set @ 18psi max, i am stuck till i get another fuel pump to run more boost. but i assume @ 20psi it is well over 300hp crank, and close to 300whp - i hope.

gt30r, someone told me that this turbo doesn't really spool until 5000rpm (full boost), but he had the bigger a/r - think .64

if i had the chance to choose again, i might have chosen gt25rs from atp site. seriously, unless you do drag strips every weekend, its dissapointing to drive a car that spools fully 5000rpm+.

Default What are your goals....thats the starting point ever ever project.

How do you drive the car?
What is its main user (street, stripe, auto-x, road race)?
What is your budget?

Be realistic....if you want 300+ hp's you will have alittle lag.
300 wheel hp's (350+ crank) is where you need to start worrying about internals
