Default Rich L: Did you get your Stage III issues worked out?

Just curious, but I remember hearing you were having some trouble with your Avant pinging with the new stage III kit out on the track. Were you able to solve this problem with APR?

Default Yeah, it's running great.

I recorded the knock sensor blocks with my VWTool and sent Brett a bunch of data. He developed a new program that runs strong with no pinging. His theory is that the 92 octane super we get up here isn't good enough for the original program. I remain impressed with APR's products and responsiveness to issues.

How's your overthruster running?

Default What gas station do you use?

I only have the APR stage I, v.3.0 and I had to (read in between the lines I was running on fumes) use some 76 premium gas (octane 92) and as soon as I puch it I heard the pinging. So I drove light footed until I reached a Chevron, filled up with premium and added a bottle of octane booster. Problem solved!

Now with the stage III, I wonder how much difference does different gas makes?

Default Overthruster is doing great. ;-)

It's good to hear you were able to get that fixed. The Stage III kit sounds awesome, but not for the Tip! Have you been out to a drag strip to do any 1/4 mile runs? Any plans on upgrading that puny, stock intercooler?

BTW, I spoke to APR about CA 92 octane gas at the Monterey event and they verified that we have "crappy gas" here in CA too. Chris just sort of shook his head and was obviously aware of the problem. ;-)

How did you capture the knock sensor data with VWTool? I use Vag-Com - I'd like to do this for my Avant to see how often the ECU is having to pull back timing via the knock sensors as I do experience occasional, transient pinging under certain conditions. I have the Bentley manual, so if it's in there, I can find it. Do you have the datablock number handy?

I would love to see APR release a kit for those of us with VAG software and notebook computers so we could "upgrade" or "downgrade" our chips on the fly.

I prefer Chevron too, but I tried 76 and Texaco with same results.

Default Data blocks.

Data block 20 is the knock sensor voltage for all 4 cylinders. Block 22 is RPM, load, and knock sensor voltage for cylinders 1 and 2. Block 23 is RPM, load and knock sensor voltage for cylinders 3 and 4.

I haven't downloaded the VAG-COM stuff as VWTool works great with Uwe's adapter. I hope he's got the data block you need in his software. If not...

The clutch and intercooler are definitely the weak links now. I won't be doing any drag racing until the clutch is sorted.

Default Thanks Rich!

I think I can get my hands on a VWTool equipped notebook for this session. Looks like I need BLocks 22 & 23 for this session. Did you also record block 20 when sent APR your log?

I did, but 22 and 23 are the important ones. Good luck.

Default Info..

In an A4 running your Fuel tank under 1/4 will cause lower Fuel PSI. My car has always pinged if I run it that low. Even when it was stock/chipped. I hooked a Fuel PSI gauge up and I cant note the drop.

You should keep the tank above 1/4 if possible.
