S3 power loss

S3 power loss
I have recently noticed a power loss with my 00 S3. Most noticable in 2nd gear between 3 and 4,000 revs. The car no longer surges forward but just smoothly accelerates slowly. There is no way I am imagining this. The car is not chipped
Audi say there is no error being recorded by the engine management system.
They say a dump valve is making a noise and will replace but do not thinf this is the caise of the loss.
What can I do?
