Default Scored cylinders...

the shop pulled the head yesterday and they found signs/evidences of scoring. They believe the problem/whatever caused the scoring came from the broken turbine(exhaust side). I'm not sure how pieces of metal (fins or whatnot) could have gotten back through the exhaust manifold. Would it be possible for the engine to suck air back in throuogh the turbo and thru the exhaust manifold, then into the block?

They think the tapping noise comes from the valve guides. I don't know. If the leak down test shows less than 3% across all cylinders, I may just button it back up. ack.

They are going to pull the cat out and clean up as much as possible. Now, I need to go to the shop, check out the damages and figure out what to do. I guess I have the option of a) clean up what I have or b) replace the engine.

Ack! one f'ing thing after another and still no car.

Default

Getting a good used 1.8 and dropping it in there would probably be cheap

Default damaged head - nicks and scratches for 1 thru 4 (BWW)

somehow, something got into the cylinders.. and started nicking and scratching up my the head. Whatever they were, they are gone... no sign or evidence of anything in each of the cylinders. The intake valves on cylinder 3 actually are opened at different "height". Weird.

Default I have seen that.

I have seen before a damaged exhaust turbine got sucked back into cylinder and create a lot more damage to what you have.

You may have still some loose peices inside engine, wear a leak down may be okay, but then a loose piece jams in valve again.

But if Valve is slightly jammed open and has contacted piston, you may have a bent valve.

One of you pics shows a little shiny edge on the intake valve, so i would look at piston and see if there is a small indent.
Is so, check straigness of valves.

Default Detonation will look like that and those are the areas it will start.

It will look like someone went through your head with a center punch. Usually #4 will be the worst.

Default Now I'm worried I'm paying for a valve job I don't need....

The shop believes the marks are caused by debris in the engine, but they couldn't find anything in it when they opened it up. They noticed the valves were alittle loose - able to move them side to side. So, they send the head off to get the valve guides replaced. Of course, I don't know bad valve guides will really cause the engine to knock/miss/tapping.

Default had a similar problem

the valves were quite a bit loose for the milage on the motor.

i came to my own conclusion that with the stress on the motor & increased EGT's the valves were getting quite hot, transmitting that heat up the shaft & expanding in the guide, causing some increased wear. so when the motor cooled off, there was more "play" in the valve/guide than normal
