Default Service Indicator on trip computer - how is mileage interval set?

Does the dealer service area set the mileage interval on the Service Indicator that shows up on the trip computer? The factory prescribed scheduled maintenance is every 5,000 miles (please no flames) but the reminder counts down from 3,000 miles. No big deal, but is this controlled by the technician when they reset the indicator or is it pre-set? If it is preset, I guess Audi USA should include 3,000 mile oil changes in the service plan that is part of the sticker price...

Default

It is set by "codeing" the Instrument Cluster, with a VAG tool (or VAG COM)
