piston rings?
valve springs?
assume all regular maintenance was done.

It's all or nothing....
80k miles isn't really all that many, and you wouldn't gain much from a rebuild, unless you want to strengthen the bottom end.
Personally, I'd save my money, run it until it blows, then build a 2.0

I was thinking that but I would rather put in some preventative cash than some rescue cash. The ...
engine has been stock to this point afaik. Just wondering what issues I could head off before going to a big turbo.
I like the 2.0 idea except I'm not sure I would want to go that far. The tuning would be beyond me.

funny you posted this... I have 77k on my 1.8T
and I am wondering the same thing before I start to mess with the engine. I think I'd just check everything over really well before I do anything

It's about the same....
If you want to strengthen, you're looking at new pistons, rings, rods, gaskets, balancing, and lots of machine work for the bottom end. The head would probably be valve seals, valve springs, lifters, valve job, and decked.
It's still going to be quite a bit.

Try checking prices on www.eurospecsport.com
I tired to order a set of 1.8t rings from Jegs. They order took 3 times as long as they said, then they ended up losing the order somewhere with UPS.

Have you checked the compression in the car yet?
If it is 175-190 then it is all good. If not then you might want to look at doing a leak down to figure out if it is valves or rings. At that point you should know what needs to be done. The cost of rebuilding is much higher then just getting a valve job and new rings.

do a chip first!...
i don't think a well maintained 1.8T with 80K should have any problems taking the power increase from a stage 3 upgrade. but you may want to start with just a chip to weed out your aux. systems first. my car now has 164K on it and has no internal engine problems. my next step is a cat back exaust.
