Default i think your thermostat is open as north49 suggested...

do you have a multimeter? a temperature probe? ( a cooking one will do)

While cold, measure the resistance between the two left most pins (tab on top). It should be pretty high - like in 2k ohm range

Then measure the temperature of the coolant in expansion tank after driving for a while - I trust you exercise caution when opening the cap. It will be better if you can get a temperature reading around the ECT it self (I'm assuming you know where it is) by just holding th probe on the tube...

Then measure the resistance again, and it should be under 500 ohms or less.

If the water temp tracks the resistance, your thermostat is most likely stuck open so everytime you drive it, moving air cools the radiator, and since there is no thermostat, the cooler fluid freely flows back to the engine.

Instead of idling and driving, why not hold the revs in place around 2000 rpm until the auxiliary cooling fan kicks on. If the inside gauge reads over half, then the thermostat is indeed stuck open.

Default I dont even think...

Itll get that warm if I hold it steady at 2k.

Im going to stop over at the dealer for a new sensor and T-stat this morning. I guess its time to put in another APR mount anyway. Thanks Eugene.

Default the air wont be flowing over the radiator & it will allow the car to heat up

with the coolant flowing all the time in 35dg weather all it takes is 5mph or so to drop the coolant temps drastically

Default It'll warm up. Put a towel in front of radiator if it's too cold..

the viscous driven fan shouldn't be coupled at low temps anyway.

That's how I've been checking heating problems in the shop for years. Good luck though.

Speaking of thermostat, I'm thinking of a way to modify that thermostat tube so I can remotely mount a thermostat - mainly for track events

Default Re: I dont even think...

Why buy that stuff at the dealer?

Check out a worldpac store, like bimmerparts.com or performancemotorcars.com.

T-stat part # is 078121113F
temp sensor (if its the brass looking one with 3-4 wires) is probably 058919501A since your car is a '96.

$14.63 for the t-stat, and $33.52 for the sensor.

Spend another $2 or so and shipping is free (ground shipping for orders over $50 is free). BTW, I used performancemotorcars.com for price lookups.
