Default Strange smoke...

When the engine get very hot (traffic jam) at idle I noticed blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. It is not consistent, it blows some and it stops. There is some oil residue in the air intake pipes due to the crankcase breather and a little on the TB hose. I'm in the process of installing a catch can. Anyone??

Default Blue is not good

Check the intercooler. Also have a friend drive behind and watch, cruising, hard throttle, lift throttle and hills. That will tell us the specific problem. And, end idle speculation.

Default blue smoke = burnt oil....

not good. It doesn't sound like it's too serious. Usually if it's rings, valve stem seals, or turbo seals, the high engine vacuum under decel will usually suck the oil in, and give you a nice smokescreen.

Oil gets thinner the hotter it gets, so it could be splashing/running into areas it normally doesn't get to.

When's the last time you had an oil change, and what weight oil? If you're running rich, then fuel can get into the oil and thin it out over time. If possible, maybe try a thicker oil and see what it does.

Default Check three things . . .

1. Check your oil level; if you over-filled the crankcase vent tube may have dumped more than the usual amount of oil into the throttle body, resulting in the burning of oil. Remember check the oil level when the car is warm, but after you have shut down the engine for several minutes to allow the oil to flow back into the oil pan. Audi Service Manual does not recommend the checking of oil when the engine is totally cold.
2. Check the underside of your car for oil leaks, the head gasket can leak oil on both the inside and the outside of the block.
3. Check the coolant expansion tank, the head gasket may not always leak oil outside the block, but the higher pressure oil system may seep into the lower pressure coolant system if there exists a head gasket problem.
Otherwise, like the others said, valve seals or rings, may cause excess oil to get into the combustion chamber.

Default Re: Strange smoke...

I've got a similar issue with my current (non-Audi) car. I had the head refreshed at a local (domestic) shop, and they evidently screwed up (at least) one of my valve stem seals.

I get a bit of smoke on startup (after sitting for a day or 2), and I get the occasional nasty puff while sitting in traffic, idling. Not all the time, but when it does leak, it leaks good.

$0.02 worth.
