Default TURBO LAG VS THROTTLE

Any engineers out there that can explain my experience? I feel more pronounced turbo lag when I fully depress the gas pedal from a standstill than when I press the gas pedal half way down for a bit and then all the way down from a standstill. It seems totally counterintuitive but it just feels like I get up and go more quickly if I don't fully floor it immediately. I don't know how this translates into actual 0-60mph times, but I definitely notice the difference in the 2 different approaches. Any explanations are welcome. (This is with a 2015 Audi A3 2.0T quattro).
