Turbonetics T3/T4 and T04
On Ebay right now there's a couple of Turbonetics turbos for sale, and I was wondering if they were a) good prices b) how much more I would have to spend to mate it to my 1.8T and c) what sort of performance gains I would see. The T3/T4 has never been used and is currently at $510. The T04E is a rebuild I think and is at $300. TIA

$510 is not bad, retail about $760 in Turbonetics price list but....
mating it to the 1.8 is an unknown and mega $$. Custom exhaust manifold, custom intake, custom chip programming with new injectors etc.. Does the compressor map for that turbo match to what you want out of the car? Will it work with the way you drive it. etc...a can of worms unless your have the training and experience with this type of work.
Just "throwing" a bigger turbo on IS NOT the way to satisfy the urge. A well developed kit would be the best way to go (such as APR, AWE, PES ). They have taken the time to make sure the individual components work as a system, after all, are you willing to be an alpha tester and play your own development engineer on your $30K car?
You can get it to work, but are you willing to really spend more to go this route than an already proven (and in the long run) less expensive alternative.
Sure $500 is cheap for a turbo but only a turbo a system doesn't make.
words of wisdom do yourself a favor and buy Corkey Bell's book on turbocharging befor you just buy a turbo with "plans".
