urs4: for your stage 3 MAF do I NEED to have a stock airbox?

Ultimately no, but it is entirely possible you'll make more/better power with one...
than if you're using/considering a cone setup. The S3 sensor is VERY sensitive to flow path turbulence and boundary layer disturbances. If you're using a cone it is IMPERATIVE that you use a cone with a great integrated velocity stack base. If a typical K&N cone is used there's very little gain and some chance for throwing occasional CEL's. However if filters like "Racing Akimoto" or Intense Performance "Big Mouth" series filters are used it seems to work fine.
The only thing you MUST have on your 30V is a 078 133 471C MAF. If it's a 078 133 471E or ANY other part number it can't be converted to Stage 3. All attempts at converting the "E" series 4 wire (latest model) MAF sensors to Stage 3 have failed thus far.

It's embossed directly on the the MAF sensor housing where the plug harness is...
there's an outside chance since your's is a 98 that you "may" have a 471A MAF as standard from the factory in which case you won't need to buy a separate MAF for conversion. In that case you just send me a core deposit of $200 in addition to the cost of the S3 MAF then I refund that deposit when I receive your old MAF housing. Thats what I do for all the 2.8 12V 96/97 A4 guys with the 471A MAF. No down-time and no additional MAF to buy.

Sweet. Thanks for your help. I will email you in about a week .. .
so you can give me the info to send the money. And to see if there is anything I can do to keep your inconvience to a minimum. Thanks again.
