Default Vortrag/ Alcon install and impressions (very long)

The kit was aquired from Todd@Vortrag Motorsports and he was very helpful in getting us through the install over the phone. The install was done at Moto Persona in Lombard, Illinois. A big thanks goes to Rob and Bryan for all of their help and expertise.
<IMG SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/5987/dsc00212.jpg">
The kit consists of the Alcon B type, 4-piston caliper, 12 inch Coleman rotor with slots, custom Vortrag caliper brackets, ss lines, fluid, Pagid pads, and all hardware.

Here are the stock brakes@46,000 miles.

This gives you a good idea of the size difference a 12 inch rotor has over the stock 11 inch.

After 4 hours and three people working, the install was finished and ready for driving.

Here is the brake clearence over my 16 inch Ronal R-28s. I am using these as my winter wheels and tires, but for now I will use these because I am waiting for spacers for the Borbets. The Borbets are for summer.

Now for the drive
First driving out of the garage I didn't really feel a difference over stock. At least as far as the feeling from the peddle. The pressure was not all there yet.
Take it easy out onto the street and do a series of 40-20 and 40-5mph stops to get off the first layer. I can already feel a huge difference in response and initial bite just by warming them up.

Not for the real fun
Going on the highway at about 100 mph and just smashing them throws me into my harness like you would't believe. TOU MUST HAVE A HARNESS FOR THIS UPGRADE! Now the brakes are nice and warm to I continue to excelerate and mash the brakes. I was actually setting off the ABS at 80 mph. The brakes are too powerfull for the tires to grip. (I was on my snows, Blizzak LM-22s)Heading back to Moto Persona, I would wait until the last second to stop at stoplights and would come to a screeching hault every time. You just stab the brakes and they lock up. From 30 mph to 0 is instuntaneous and the tires were burning bad. I can't wait to get my summers back on and see the grip difference.

In the end I HIGHLY RECOMEND these brakes. Todd@Vortrag did a great job in creating this kit and everything was straight forward durring the installation. Also, thanks again to everyone at Moto Persona for the install and great customer service.

And yes, The rotors are on the wrong sides of the car in these pics but it was fixed.

Thanks, I hope everyone enjoyed my first write up for the forum.

Default These rotors are gas slotted WRONG!!!

The gas slotting must oppose the direction of the vains inside the rotor. Failure to do so will cause the rotor to eventually crack along that slot.

Anyone else pick this up?

I don't know if he edited or not, but he acknowledges this in the last line. Says it's fixed now.

Default I think what Mike was trying to say is not that the rotors are on the wrong side but the slotting

are done in the wrong orientation in relation to the vanes.

Default Moot...

It will crack anyways, the colemans are racing disks. The groove direction is better for pad life.

Default I haven't cracked a Coleman yet

Warped once, but not crack.

They're cheap, and durable, even on the big *** S4. I prefer no slotting though.

Tell that to ATE then. They should go out of business.

Actually, both the direction and the side of install are wrong.

No they won't , who told you that? Pads don't care which way the slot goes by.
