What are the benefits of a downpipe? does it make the car louder?

Quick answer is: You're removing one of the big restrictors in the exhaust stream.
I've read the details, but can't remember. Sorry. Maybe a search would help. Found a bunch of stuff on it in the A4 forum when i searhced.
