What brand of synthetic oil to use

What is the best brand of synthetic oil to use in my 2000 A4 1.8tqms? Any input would be appreciated!!

Re: What brand of synthetic oil to use

In short, it really doesn't matter for a street-driven engine.

Mobil, Castrol, Neo, Royal Purple, Kendall, Valvoline, etc. Take your pick.

This question, for most people, is like asking which is better; black-hair, blonde, brunette, redhead, you get the picture.

FWIW, the CQ gets Castrol (all fluids are Castrol), the A4 gets Mobil, and the 90q12v gets Valvoline.

For road use, the more important factor is making sure you change it enough.

Any good quality oil will do, some synthetics have advantages, but a regular oil will also work just fine.

I use Redline race oil in the motor, and Neo in the tranny/diff's. Both suit me fine, but I also change the fluids very, very frequently. In the motor, it gets changed every 500 miles or so, and the diff's/tranny every few thousand. I also use Neo oil in the struts too.

In short use a good quality name brand, properly graded oil, and change it often.

190,000 (modded) miles and I use...

Any name brand full synthetic with regular changes will do.

It's organic oil and/or infrequently changed oil that gums-up your engine. All oil breaks down; full synthetic oil breaks down much more slowly.

I have used Valvoline's and Mobil's full synthetic oils. My mechanic likes Valvoline better as he has had fewer problems with gaskets using the Valvoline. He believes something in the Mobil more easily seeps through the gaskets over time. Perhaps that's why Mobil recently changed their formula??? I do not know, but, with 146,000 miles on my gaskets, they have remained tight the last few years using the Valvoline.

If you have deep pockets, use Amsoil as they make the best oil of all, but its more expensive.
