what is so hard about replacing a compressor wheel on a ball bearing turbo?
#2
What happened?
Is it just the wheel that needs to be replaced, or did the bearings wear out, causing the wheel to gouge the housing, or ????
I would think that rebuilding a ball bearing turbo would be a little harder (probably tighter clearances) but not impossible. Who have you talked to?

just the wheel needed to be replaced
a retailer told me I needed a new turbo, my shop ordered a new wheel, already balanced, installed it and it's on the car now. Supposedly it's running fine. IF that's the case, I would be pissed to have spent way more $$$ than necessary on the turbo.

could be
but in my sitatution, I got the compressor for $80 overnighted, and shop put it on. In this case the shop was responsible for the damage and was going to pay for the repair if they couldn't do it. Or for a new turbo, although we found the same model turbo substancially cheaper than the source by looking around online.

I have always been told that you need to balance the entire rotating assembly...
that means the compressor wheels bolted to the CHRA with the turbine wheel.
I assume this is the only way to get a properly balance and a CHRA.
just balancing the compressor wheel does nothing in the way of balancing the CHRA.

Re: You need a new turbo...
unless magically the compressor housing didnt get scratched which looks damn impossible. Once you need a new wheel and housing, the cost is almost the same so new turbo is wise. For $80 I'd be careful at what compressor wheel is going in there. It would suck to get the older or even a turbonetics wheel that isnt as efficient and doesnt flow as well. Good luck
