I know on the S4, there's a spacer plate between the trans and the engine, and the shift linkeage is obviously different. Does anyone know if the clutch and flywheel parts are the same, or would it have to be upgraded to S4 components, too? Are the trannys the same size, making the axles interchangeable? Any thoughts...

Some answers...
The tranny housings are the same. From what I can gather, you would use the 1.8T bellhousing. If you are using an aftermarket 1.8T clutch, you might have a problem with the input shaft for the transmission. I don't know if they are both 22 spline (if memory serves correct). IMHO, you would be better off pulling the 1.8T tranny and stuffing a taller 5th from Quaife to reduce cruise RPMs.

Side by side they appear very different, both in size and hook ups
The shifter is on the wrong side, bigger, longer,heavier,etc.. You need some factory manuals or even the Bently CD would help. The 1.8T block is still a VW Rabbit block, so there are many avenues to pursue.
