Default Who can explain "shot-peening?"

Pertaining to rods. Thanks.

Default Works the same on rods as on other materials ... helps relieve built in stresses, especially on

materials subjected to cyclic stresses.

Default By doing what to the metal?

Removing some of it to balance the part, heating it, coating it with something?

Default prevents the start of a fatigue crack.

"In general, the shot peening process produces a compressive stress on the surface of the material, thereby increasing the resistance of the material to crack initiation"

Default The process entails bombarding the surface with metal shot at high velocity.

the result is that the material becomes what's know as case hardened. Case hardening is beneficial because it leaves the material with a dense, brittle surface and a ductile inner core.

Default A cold-working process in which the material surface is peened to induce compressive stresses.......

....and thereby improve fatigue life.

The procedure of impacting a metal surface with a high-velocity stream of metal shot or glass beads for the purpose of (1) cleaning or (2) improving resistance to stress corrosion by producing a compressive stress.

Default low cycle cyclic stresses...

The benefit to shot peening is really in the low end of the SN curve

Default the major benefit is that it helps equalize the stress in the part

by cold working the part with the shot peening process you help equalize the "built in stress" So stressed induced during the heating or machining phases of the part manufacturing are removed....as stated by other to help with fatigue life. In reality though it is only good for certain features, and doesnt buy you a lot under certain applications

Default

And don't do it with the rod bolts in

Metal message...helps with the stress.
