Default Will a 2.8 FWD tranny work with a S4 engine?

My engine was hydrolocked a couple months ago, and i want to improve my cars performance as I do a rebuild. But turns out the most HP a 12v can have is 230 hp. Not worth the 4k it would take to set up the car. So now im looking into this option, if it is an option. Can a S4 engine be dropped into a 96 body, and work with the 5 speed FWD tranny? Or can it be done with some mods to the tranny? thanks guys!
