would removing my muffles effect performance?.. i have a 3.0 a4

Not necessarily...
The only thing you will gain is more "Noise". If you want more power then get yourself a true dual exhaust system. I'd say gains of 10-15HP are possible with a good built exhaust system.

Our OEM cats have a lot of restriction, get high-flows when the time is right. . .
As for mufflers they constitute a far lesser restrictor, especially since they lie beyond the cats. Removing mufflers and/or upgrading mufflers will release very little hp, even if you upgrade to a true dual exhaust system. The hp gets robbed by the cats, because your engine cannot push the exhaust any faster through the cats to make way for the incoming O2 in the combustion chamber. The Audi exhaust system for the 12v has about 40% too much back pressure. I assume the same is true for its other engines.
