So, it seems I must be the only A4 owner who has a problem with cold starts.

Upon cold startup, there is an audible engine "skip" a beat and then idles a little rough for 1-2 seconds.

The answer I get from dealer is "this is normal" because upon start up, when the secondary (?) pump comes on, it draws a large load that causes the this event and also rpm fluctuation due to computer throttle adaptation.

My 2001 does idle @ 1200rpm for 40secs and backs down to 800rpm which I have conferred that is normal @ cold starts. But the skipping a beat is NOT normal.

Please help. I am not an engine expert, but i know something is not right.

Any fault codes stored? Cold-start system working properly?

Not sure what would show up on an A4 in codes, or what your cold-start system is like...

No fault codes, no CEL and the cold-start system is normal. i.e. goes to 1200rpm idle for 30-40 secs, drops to 800rpm idle. That, is fine.

However, that "skip-a-beat" at the start of the 1200rpm idle at ignition is rather suspicious.
