Default X-post. Questions about rolling fenders on A4.

So I called up a few places yesterday about getting my fenders rolled. This is what I got:

German Auto Body in Santa Clara refused to do it. He said it's not a good idea and I should do everything else possible to solve the problem (new wheels, raise car, etc). Ok, that's bull****.

Streetwize in Fremont. They are asking $170 to do the fronts only. They say they will heat the paint and all that. They have a nice website if that means anything. They seem good but expensive.

The Works in Santa Clara (I think). The guy there said he would charge $150 but said he wouldn't heat the paint because it could burn. He also said it would take over an hour to do.

I am so confused. These prices seem really high.

Questions:

1. Should they heat the paint?
2. How long does it take?
3. What's a fair price?
4. How do I know if rolling my fenders will stop the rubbing? I mean, how do I tell if the rubbing is bad or not? My wheels are 18X8 BBS RX with 32 offset.

Thanks a lot for the help! I am really confused right now about what to do. If anyone has recommendations for other shops that would be great too.

I also bought an s4 wheel liner because my current one is getting really cracked up. A small piece of it actually fell off into my hand as i felt under my fender.

Thanks again!

Sachin

Default Yes, you want to heat the paint, specially if you are folding the fender lip....

from it's stock setting of about 90degrees to 180 degrees. Otherwise, cracking will result. The heating process must be done carefully as discoloration may result too. And they have to take off your wheel liners.

But if you are careful, you can roll them yourself to a 135 degree or so angle with a "baseball bat" and no need to heat up the paint. You'll have to do it slowly inch by inch, traversing the whole fender and back and forth until desired angle is met. I used an old wooden closet rod to do mine. And with my 20mm offset MAE's, I need that.

If I don't want to do it myself, do you think $150 is too much to pay?

Default $150, fronts only no heat? Hmmm. Maybe I could make some money ;P

Seriously, I hope this is not their first time. I condone Streetwize for acting immaturely back in '96 when I was out to set to have the first A4 ever fixed up, plus their prices are quite high.
But I have seen their work on rolled fenders on mainly German cars and they do a pretty good job. I'd trust the $20 more on them. Maybe you need to shop around more. Streetwize uses a tool that can fold the lip and bulge the fenders. Heat is good too. That is what you should look for, not a guy with a baseball bat.

By the way, unless you are installing 10" rims on the rear, no nead to bulge them as the lips are already folded. That's why I think the $150 only covers the front. Good luck.
