Xpost from A6 forum...Chipping '01 2.7T using spare ECU board
Recently there was some discussion ... about issues with chipping
a 2001 model 2.7T using a spare ECU board. For some reason my attempts to
search the board for that discussion did not succeed. As far as I remember, the
issue was something like when you swap the ECU board in 2001 models, it
needs a code to activate the immobilizer, and the code is only available with
the Audi dealers since it is specific to each vehicle's VIN number. That
practically closed the doors of being able to chip the '01 models using a spare
ECU board.
However, my local GAIC dealer says he can chip my car ('01 2.7t) using a
spare ECU board. I tried to warn him about what I had read in this discussion
board. He said he understands that apart from clearing the low power fault
code, there is another secret menu he has to go to every time the boards are
swapped, and he knows how to do that.
My question is, how can he do that unless he gets the code from the dealer?
Is my understanding of the issues incorrect? Can someone explain to me what
is possible and what is not?

Immobilizer 3 relies on a digital signature tied to...
the instrument cluster, the VIN, the key, and the ECU. You get a vagtool, and get the unique hash code that gets generated, and call the dealer who takes the number and your VIN, and contacts AoA, who gives the dealer a code based on they numbers YOU provided. This number gets put into the ECU to release the immobilizer. NOONE but the dealers have been able to get a spare ECU to work. Enter it wrong, and you have to wait 2555 minutes (3 days) before you can try again!
