Default Best mode to use for indoor action w/ the Nikon D80..

I just want to hear what combo's worked best for you guys.

The results I've gotten using it in Action mode have kinda sucked.

My daughter had an indoor swim meet and the camera just failed to yield anything decent.

TIA.

Fast lens, higher ISO, shoot in RAW (or whatever Nikons make) and custom manual WB.

Default Mostly like Kris said, I would add the following

Aperture priority or manual.
I rarely use a zoom inside. If I do it the 24-85 f2.8/f4.

Get an external flash like a SB 400 or SB 600. You'll be able to bounce off the flash off ceilings and walls and get more pleasing lighting. When using flash use the Flash setting on the White Balance is comes out better then Auto WB.

The Nikon 50 f1.8 is my lens of choice for kids. Fast and sharp and for a 100 dollars you can't go wrong. A Nikon 35 F2.0 would be a nice choice as well.

Default Best bet is to post 3-4 sample images that show what didn't work out along with the exif data.

Using the scene modes isn't always the best way to get good results. Viewing the exifs on the fubar'd files should reveal what the limiting factors are. Let us know what lens you used as well.

Beautiful M5 BTW!
