Default First shots with DSLR.. any thoughts?

Using Canon 40D with kit 28-135 lens. Trying to play around with DOF a bit. Any recommendations? Also, presently have camera set to take jpeg and RAW. The camera saves the raw in a CR2 format, but my photoshop 7 does not recognize that format. Do I need to download something to get photoshop to load those?

Default I don't think Adobe offers updates for the older versions of PS to handle the newer raw files.

The camera manufacturers update the raw files for each new model camera and Adobe typically doesn't bother to offer updates to their older software so you can open them.

You will likely have to upgrade to Photoshop CS3 or CS4 to open the 40D raw (.cr2) files.

Correct - you need at least CS3 for 40D RAW files

Default or just download Adobe Camera Raw (for free) which would support that format

i have to do that for the RAW files my 5D mk2 produces as i am using CS3 and that camera is only supported in CS4.

Default That only works for CS3 and newer. The OP has PS 7.

Default Ok

"The Camera Raw 4.6 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS3 or versions of Photoshop Elements earlier than Photoshop Elements 5.0 for Windows and Photoshop Elements 4.01 for Mac."
