I don't know anything about digital SLRs except that they take cool pictures if you know what you're doing, which I hope to learn.

I saw a good deal on the new Canon 50D but my friend says it's not worth the price premium over the new Rebel XSi 12.2 MP camera.

Also, if I go with the cheaper XSi, it comes with the 18-55mm lens. What other lenses would you recommend? I have no idea what distance 18-55 covers. Should I get a 28-135 as well? 70-something?

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP

Default 50D is a lot of camera for a beginner. I'd actually go for an older version of the XSi.

Save some bucks and find a lightly used XTi or XS. The differences are pretty slight. If you enjoy using an SLR camera, then you can sell that one without losing too much money and upgrade to something nicer.

Just my opinion. Invest in glass, save on body.

Default At this point the XSi should be just fine for your needs

The 18-55 is a nice general-purpose beginner lens for travelling, landscapes, indoor shots and portraits. You might want to have also something a bit longer for shooting sports, wildlife and other outdoor activities. The Canon 55-250mm lens is pretty good and also quite inexpensive. With those two lenses you are good to go!

After you've done some shooting with these two lenses, we'll tell you more about the magic letter L

Default Then again if you have money...

the difference between the 50D and XSi is huge - not so much in the final image quality but rather in the usability. The back wheel alone is worth the price difference. I'd say if you can afford an S4, you can likely afford the upgrade XSi -> 50D for the usability alone.

Default Search for my post just 2 weeks back.. I had the exact same situation...

After tons of research I decided against the 50D. I then considered a used 40D or XSi. I ended up getting a killer deal on a 1 year old 40D with lens from CL. I then spent the extra money on tripod and a great 17-55 lens.

I would say get the XSi or a 40D. If you want the camera for random shots here and there, get the XSi. If your serious about the hobby and plan to revolve activities around your shots, get the 40D.

Default After playing around with the XSi I changed my mind and ended up with a Nikon D80

I didn't like the feel of the Canon at all.

Default My bias of course but IMHO Nikons do handle better than Canons...

all the important controls are easier to access and the menu systems are better laid out. Then again it may be just that I'm used to Nikon. The Nikon just feels better in my hands. YMMV

Default I hadn't thought about the usability. Any idea which stores would have these things out for me to

play with? I don't mind spending the extra money if in the end, every time I use the cheaper camera, I wish I had gotten the more expensive one.
