Default Depends on the specific lens, each brand has their gems as well as bad apples...

but Sigma is notorious for having quality control issues past and present, more so than other brands fwiw.

I used Sigmas for my Minolta film SLR and I've had to get a few replacements due to autofocus issues and zoom ring defects out of the box. Now that I've gone Nikon, except for one Tamron zoom, I've stuck with Nikon glass and so far no issues at all and QC has been excellent on all 5 pieces I've acquired so far. I'm sure the same can be said of Canon L glass.

Default I'll say Sigma since i've never used a Tamron lens.

the sigma EX line is top notch fit, finish, and IQ even when compared to Canon lenses. I've owned three in the past and wouldn't hesitate recommending them to others. Yeah, some people seem to have focusing issues, but i haven't experienced that personally yet.

for some reason i always viewed Tamron as a low end brand or like a kit lens.

Default I will say it likely depands on the sample you get. Tamron, like Sigma, has a

reputation for inconsistency in their QC and some people get great lenses and some don't. Your best bet is to find a store locally and try out their inventory until you find a sharp sample or go second hand and ask sellers to send you sample shots in RAW (or meet up and take them yourself) until you find a lens you like.

Default the one i'm considering is the 30mm f/1.4

have a (Canon) friend who hates sigma, but says tamron is better. and also noticed on the lensrental.com site, they seem to emphasis how sigma has been know for QC problems.
