Default Looking for a decent tripod

I read on here to check out the CF Gitzo but after checking them out on B&H those are going to be out of my price range.

I saw this Manfrotto tripod (see link) that seems to fit the bill for me (have a nikon d90, photography is just a hobby). Outside of weight, any reason to get a CF tripod?

Any other suggestions or tips would be great, there are so many tripod choices its a bit difficult for me to narrow down the search as I just recently entered the photography world. Thanks.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/222207-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_190XDB_804RC2_190XDB

Default Per previous discussions. Manfrotto is pretty good. Spend 200 to make RKA happy :-)

Default I've got a Manfrotto you can borrow if you're just looking to mess around with one.

It's about 15 years old and still going strong. I have a few heads for it, plus goodies like a clamp mount, a NodalNinja (for making panoramas) and the Astrotrac (motorized adapter for tracking stars.) I also have a Manfrotto monopod which is an intersting alternative.

You're likely to want to own a tripod, but it's not a bad idea to play around first and see if you'd use it in the long term.

PM me or e-mail me if you want to borrow anything.

Default That's one of the heads I have, and I honestly have mixed feelings about it.

The single-hand release thing is pretty cool, but the standoff from the center of rotation (middle of the ball) to the plate where the camera sits is about 6", which is way too far. There's a newer version of the head where the grip comes off to the side so the standoff isn't as far. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/480296-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging__BO190XB322RC_Tripod_Sy stem.html

I haven't played with the lower profile version, but I bet they have both down at Glazers so you could compare the two. (And now that they out-of-state places charge sales taxes, you might think about picking it up at Glazers -- they have good prices and FANTASTIC service.)

If you're hell-bent on spending money then go for it, but borrowing mine is free. And it would give you the opportunity to try a few different styles of head and see what you like before you make the purchase.
