Default Try this - it yields an equivalent to 175MP

all you need is a really good scan of the 35mm negative, and you've got waaaay more MP than any digital camera on the market today.

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Kyocera-Yashica-T4-35mm-Film-Camera_W0QQitemZ110351669328QQcmdZViewItemQQptZFil m_Cameras?hash=item110351669328&_trksid=p3286. c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12% 7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C

Default taken from Ken Rockwell's site re: film and MP

The Digital Resolution of Film

So how many pixels does it take to describe all the detail we can get from film?

Fuji Velvia 50 is rated to resolve 160 lines per millimeter. This is the finest level of detail it can resolve, at which point its MTF just about hits zero.

Each line will require one light and one dark pixel, or two pixels. Thus it will take about 320 pixels per millimeter to represent what's on Velvia 50.

320 pixels x 320 pixels is 0.1MP per square millimeter.

35mm film is 24 x 36mm, or 864 square millimeters.

To scan most of the detail on a 35mm photo, you'll need about 864 x 0.1, or 87 Megapixels.

But wait: each film pixel represents true R, G and B data, not the softer Bayer interpolated data from digital camera sensors. A single-chip 87 MP digital camera still couldn't see details as fine as a piece of 35mm film.

Since the lie factor factor from digital cameras is about two, you'd need a digital camera of about 87 x 2 = 175 MP to see every last detail that makes onto film.

That's just 35mm film. Pros don't shoot 35mm, they usually shoot 2-1/4" or 4x5."

At the same rates, 2-1/4" (56mm square) would be 313 MP, and 4x5" (95x120mm) would be 95 x 120 = 11,400 square millimeters = 1,140 MP, with no Bayer Interpolation. A digital camera with Bayer Interpolation would need to be rated at better than 2 gigapixels to see things that can be seen on a sheet of 4x5" film.

Default lol...Ken Rockwell...*sigh*

Just because someone has enough money to buy a domain and use it as a personal soap box doesn't make it credible. I'm speaking in general terms about him, as I really have no idea what the correct answer is, only that his "facts" are always questionable.

Default I'm not an engineer...

and I recall him claiming to be some sort of electronics expert so I take him at his word when he start talking about Bayer interpolation etc. Whether you like him or hate him, film still appears to contain a lot more information than your typical P&S digital camera. And really, photography is art, and a lot of art is well.....opinion.

Default Believe what you like, but you're not doing yourself any favors by taking his word for gospel.

When 24 MP cameras came out, the industry was clamoring about how those cameras were encroaching on medium format. Now given the disparity between that figure and Ken Rockwell's (175MP), something doesn't make sense.

Create a 6 foot poster out of the image from that point and shoot and out of an image from a 1DsIII. Care to guess which one will come out better? All that silly number crunching won't make a difference.

Default What makes you believe I take his word for gospel?

He seems to be a reasonably intelligent and good photographer who happens to have a website. I find it entertaining, and sometimes I learn a thing or three. But for real training, I prefer something like the Rocky Mountain School Of Photography. Or a good book.

The real point is, that yes, while the 24MP 8k camera may create as good if not better poster than a drum scanned image from a quality 35mm P&S, said P&S costs about 100 bucks. There's a huge difference in cost. The OP wrote about 25MP and low cost. I submitted that a quality P&S is about the only way to get the kind of quality that 25MP implies. I stand by that.

The digital P&S cameras with their small sensors and ever increasing MP chips don't really do much for me. I would prefer that they create a low noise high iso chip than one with more MP. Certainly film in an "analogue" way, falls into that category.
