Default So which one do I want and why?

Nikon MC-DC1 Remote Release ($25 on Amazon)

Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared) ($15 on Amazon)

But because it's infrared you have to be in front of the camera to communicate with the receiver. That I assume makes it difficult to frame your shot and focus.

Default Save yourself the $$$ and get this one

Had it for my D40x, bought it for a friend's D80 and it worked like a charm with both.<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/IR-Remote-Control-for-Nikon-ML-L3-D40x-D50-D60-D70s-D80_W0QQitemZ250376705629QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera _Camcorder_Remotes?hash=item250376705629&amp;_trks id=p3286.c0.m14&amp;_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65% 3A12|39%3A1

Can you 'lock' the shutter open, or will I have to hold the button?

Default you can focus with the wired remote

i don't think you can with the wireless if that makes a difference to you. i have the wired remote. it's effective.

Default hmm thanks... maybe I'll get both

I see them serving different purposes.

If the infrared is on front of the camera taking a picture of the sunrise with say a 30 second exposure would be annoying. I'm gonna have to be in front of the camera but not in the way.

I'd rather have a cable for that function.

Default no

you just hold the remote right over the top of the camera. You dont need to get in front of the camera.

Default 2nd. i've had wired and wireless.

the wired was annoying because of the limited distance you had to use it.

Default also you risk introducing some sort of vibration when you either let the cable go or

even holding onto if when the shutter opens.
