Default Audi 2017 Q3 Spontaneous Sunroof Explosion while driving

On 6/30/18, I was driving my 2017 Audi Q3 on the freeway, and the sunroof spontaneously exploded. The glass shattered and sent shards, some large, of glass into the front seats and back seats of the car. My arm was cut in several places. I was able to pull over to the shoulder, and call 911. The car was taken to the dealership. No news or explanation. Have there been any other incidents with Q3's and spontaneous sun roof explosions? Very dangerous and traumatic.

Yeah that's nasty business. You're on the Q5 forum by the way.Seems to happen on all brands and so far I haven't seen a reasonable explanation as to why ?.

Extremes of temperature difference, such as having very hot air just under the glass and rapidly cooling air just above, are thought to be the cause of this. The dealers will say it was a stone....

This has been happening recently to a number of brands of cars, not just Audi. Consumer reports had an article on it a few months ago. Glass is extremely strong until it gets a defect such as a scratch at which point the strength does decrease dramatically. The tempered glass used on side windows and sunroofs also has built in stress so when it goes it explodes. It would not surprise me if the reason we are hearing about more of these is that the car makers are using thinner glass to save weight. There have been recommendations that the sunroofs be made like the windshield with two layers of glass with a tough layer of plastic film bonded between them.

I had the same experience with my 2013 Q3 on 20th October 2019. Driving on a dual carriageway at approx 70 mph, the roof exploded showering my wife and me with glass. No obvious reason, and have just got the car back from the repair shop. Very expensive repair which was paid for by my Insurance. Is this a product fault, or a rare and random event?
